Jay Schottenstein to Receive NRF Visionary Award for Leadership

Over a life in retail, Jay Schottenstein has learned a thing or two about seeing around corners.

So it’s only fitting that the National Retail Federation has tapped the executive chairman and chief executive officer of American Eagle Outfitters Inc., to receive The Visionary award at its 12th annual NRF Foundation Honors on Jan. 10.

“Jay Schottenstein’s leadership has been instrumental in building AEO into the influential, multibrand powerhouse it is today,” said Matthew Shay, president and CEO of the NRF. “His vision has guided AEO through decades of growth and change, helping to make the retailer a leader in denim, intimates and the specialty apparel space.”

Schottenstein grew AEO from a single brand into a global retail business with more than $5 billion in sales under the American Eagle, Aerie, Offline by Aerie, Todd Snyder and Unsubscribed names.

Schottenstein said it was an “honor to be recognized” and sought to give much of the credit for the company’s success to “the most remarkable team in the business.”

“Having spent my entire life in retail, this industry has shaped who I am, and I’m incredibly proud of all we have achieved together,” he said. “We have navigated shifting market landscapes and periods of change, yet our commitment to excellence and serving our customers has never wavered.”

Schottenstein also serves as chairman and CEO of SB360 Capital Partners and executive chairman of Designer Brands Inc. as well as chairman of Schottenstein Property Group and Schottenstein Stores Corp., which his grandfather founded more than a century ago.

He’s in good company receiving The Visionary award, which in the past has gone to the likes of Tommy Hilfiger, Abercrombie & Fitch Co. CEO Fran Horowitz, Nike executive chairman Mark Parker, former Walmart president and CEO Doug McMillon and former Levi’s CEO Chip Bergh.
