When a print is really good (and really well implemented), it lifts the energy of a room. Take gingham as an example; everyone’s favorite picnic plaid. This checked motif is like the golden retriever of the print world—it’s energetic, cheery, and plays nicely with others. And though gingham is on regular rotation in summer wardrobes, within the context of home decor, it can be embraced all year round.
“Gingham is inherently seasonless to my team and I,” says designer Amber Lewis, who uses it the same way one might a stripe or floral. (Her upcoming book, Interiors, is full of gingham inspiration.) She’s noticed an uptick in gingham interiors lately, particularly when it’s used to complement other prints. Her advice for layering is to review the scale and color within the context of the rest of your space. “Do you want to layer the pattern with a neutral palette or use it as a pop?” (Upholstery, she explains, is a great way to achieve this.) “If that’s still too much commitment you can utilize the pattern in accessories such as a tablecloth, bedspread, or throw pillow,” she says.
Vogue’s Favorite Gingham Decor:
Of course, there are plenty of ways to incorporate gingham into your home that go beyond the throw blanket or table runner. Think big with a patterned headboard to anchor your bedroom. If that’s a bit too splashy for your taste, Lewis is also a fan of a pleated gingham lampshade. Whatever the approach, let the 30 gingham decor pieces below inspire your next home refresh.
The Gingham Bedding
The secret to a good night’s sleep? Gingham bedding, surely. (All those cozy inns have to be on to something.) You can keep it subtle by just using sheets and pillow cases, or go full-on pattern in your duvet cover too for a maximalist bent. For an unexpected hint of print, try a gingham dust ruffle.
