Ernest W. Baker presented a refined collection for spring 2027 during its second runway show in Paris.
“This season we kept the focus on our tailoring,” explained Reid Baker, half of the design duo behind the brand.
He and Inês Amorim opted to break sartorial codes. This was an exercise in reduction, with garments pared down as much as possible. Sleeves were even stripped from double-breasted blazers, for instance, to new effect.
“We used different fabrics or styled them in a way that would break the tradition and the ‘classicness’ of tailoring,” Baker continued. Cue strong checked materials, which “evoke this kind of DIY ’80s New York City underground kind of feeling,” he said.
Baker and Amorim paired such checked tailored jackets with pieces sporting bold, expressive prints. (Think dalmation-esque spots spangling a collared man’s shirt or a pencil skirt.)
Fabrications were key, according to Amorim, underlining bouclés as an example. They played with suede — one full light pink look came in it, from the gloves to the boots, jackets and pants — and some leather.
The display began with garments in monochrome, then moved into summery shades including gray, beige and white.
Baker said of the lineup: “Hopefully, in the end, it gives the feeling, rigidity and structure that tailoring has, but then in a way makes it feel new.”
That mission was accomplished.
