“You know when you interview someone and you know they’re gonna be a star?” Chioma asks Chloe on today’s episode of The Run-Through. For Chioma, one such moment came in the winter of 2020, when she first met model Anok Yai for Vogue’s April cover story. Six years later, in honor of Anok’s June cover story for British Vogue, Chioma chatted with her again, this time for the podcast.
Recalling the recent health struggles that were partly the subject of her British Vogue profile (by Funmi Fetto), Anok becomes emotional. “While I was in the hospital, I wasn’t really thinking about my career at all. And then there was one day when I was feeling frail. I remember thinking, Oh, I could pass away right now, and there’s nothing I can do about it.”
Coming out the other side of it, however, gave Anok a new lease on life—not to mention a greater appreciation for how precious and fragile life is. Recovery was slow, but she credits her friends and family for supporting her through that period. “I respect what I was put through. I look at life with whole new eyes,” she says.
Also on today’s episode, Chioma and Chloe discuss their recent mini-vacations (to Il Pellicano in Italy and Charleston, South Carolina, respectively) and look ahead to this weekend, which just may include the wedding of the century.
