In a world full of new drinks hitting shelves seemingly every few days — especially lately with a large emphasis on electrolytes and hydration — coconut water is nature’s enduring prize. Coconut water is a natural source of electrolytes (as well as potassium, sodium, magnesium, and calcium) and comes straight from the tropical fruit. In its own category alone, it has dozens of options from a myriad of brands.
To figure out which is the best, we spent the afternoon tasting 10 different brands to see which ones really delivered.
So, What’s the Best Coconut Water Brand?
For this test, we focused on plain coconut water (although a handful had pulp). Then we narrowed the brands down based on availability, popularity, and affordability. They ranged in price from $2 all the way up to $8, although most were around $4 at the time of this tasting.
After an afternoon of sampling and tallying the scores, this is the one we’ll be hydrating with forever.
We recruited seven coworkers in our office to taste test 10 different coconut water brands. Our team of experts (including devoted coconut water fans) ranked the coconut waters across four criteria: looks (we drink with our eyes first), smell, flavor, and texture. To keep things fair, no one knew which brands were included until after the scores were tallied.
Best Coconut Water: Harmless Harvest Organic Coconut Water
Harmless Harvest Organic Coconut Water took the top spot in our tasting. It earned enthusiastic praise from the entire panel. Haley, our creative producer, described it as “smooth, sweet, tasty, and refreshing,” and she even declared it a “would-buy.”
“I love the pink! It’s got a lightly sweet smell and tastes refreshing and actually thirst-quenching,” said Ali, our associate groceries editor. Meanwhile, Reece, our account manager (and coconut water superfan), “loved” this one, noting that it’s “a bit sweeter than the rest” — despite having no added sugar — and also “the most refreshing out of the bunch.”
Runner-Up: Naked Coconut Water
Rebecca, our senior vice president of creative strategy, said that Naked Coconut Water is “super coconut-forward” and has a nice, crisp texture. Reece was also a fan, saying that it tastes so “coconutty,” and reminiscent of actual coconut chunks.
So how come it didn’t take the highest marks? A few testers weren’t as all-in on this one. Ali said that it had a “sun-tan-lotion smell” that translated a bit to its taste. Still, it earned enough praise that it’s a very strong contender.
Honorable Mention: Zico 100% Coconut Water
Zico 100% Coconut Water stood out for its clean, understated flavor. “Flavor is refreshing,” said Reece, who described it as “water-like” in the best way possible (very natural tasting).
Rebecca also picked up on that subtle profile and was a fan; she appreciated its “more neutral coconut flavor” compared to some of the sweeter, more intense ones from the lineup.
Honorable Mention: Vita Coco Pure Coconut Water
Celia, our editorial assistant, described the classic Vita Coco Pure Coconut Water as “sweet and creamy, but not overwhelming.” It’s one of the richer options in the tasting lineup, but doesn’t veer too far into coconut milk territory.
Others, like Rebecca and Ali, did pick up on a slight aftertaste — possibly tied to that extra-creamy texture — but we still considered it a very strong contender from the lineup.
Honorable Mention: Taste Nirvana Real Coconut Water
Taste Nirvana Real Coconut Water was enjoyed for striking a balanced sweetness level that still tasted natural and refreshing. Celia noted that it was “not super sweet, but still sweet,” making it an easy-drinking option for coconut-water fans who don’t want something that’s overly sugary.
It also landed among Ali’s favorites, who simply called it “really good” — high praise in a lineup full of strong contenders. Other tasters wished there was a bit more flavor from this one, but it’s a great neutral option.
How We Tested the Coconut Water Brands
We recruited seven volunteers who work in our office to randomly taste 10 different coconut water brands. Ahead of the tasting Ali, our associate groceries editor, poured sample-size portions into small cups. She assigned each brand a letter — A through J — to conceal their identities ahead of the taste test.
Tasters were encouraged to sample the coconut waters in random order (to avoid giving any particular brand an advantage) before writing down their thoughts. Our team then rated each one on a scale of one to five (1 = No, thanks; 2 = Meh; 3 = Pretty good; 4 = Really like; 5 = Yes, Please!) across four criteria — look, smell, texture, and flavor — and included any specific observations, tasting notes, and general opinions worth mentioning. They were also asked to answer, arguably, the most important question of all: Would you buy this coconut water?
