One might say that Cher — entertainer, actress, mother and fashion icon — has had many lives. That would be right. Women’s Wear Daily has chronicled her each step along the way, watching her star rise, fall and rise again. She may be the among the most surprised by the longevity of her career. But, in celebration of her 80th birthday, there seems to be nothing unpredictable about her influence.

The renowned entertainer, famous for her 1960s hippie vibes — long hair down to there and bell bottoms — was always a style risk-taker. Her collaborations with American costumer and fashion designer Bob Mackie have long been iconic. By the time she was 22 and able to vote, she and then-husband Sonny Bono were already influencing everything from fashion to politics.
WWD sat down with the couple in May of 1968, as change was on the horizon. Fast forward to today and Cher is still having her moment.
